The Client

Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria S.A., better known by its initialism BBVA, is a Spanish multinational financial services company based in Madrid and Bilbao, Spain. It is one of the largest financial institutions in the world and is present mainly in Spain, South America, North America, Turkey, and Romania.

BBVA's operational headquarters are located in Madrid, in the 'Ciudad BBVA' complex. It is Spain's second-largest bank after Banco Santander. It is listed on the Madrid Stock Exchange, the New York Stock Exchange and the Mexican Stock Exchange. It is also a part of the IBEX 35 as well as the Dow Jones EURO STOXX 50.

It has more than 7500 offices, 120.000 employees and 74.5 million customers, and is present in more than 30 countries.

BBVA is in the top 35 of the 1,000 best banks in the world, according to “The Banker”.

We have been working on streamlining internal processes and automatizing workflows for different stakeholders within BBVA.

In 2013 BBVA decided to tackle the revamp of its Online Banking Platform and as we were a company that had successfully provided them with custom product development services before, we were brought on board, once again, to work with them for this new project.

The Challenges
  • Overcoming various technical challenges related to connecting disparate channels and external services seamlessly.
  • Enhancing cybersecurity to protect the user's assets and confidential information.
  • Careful planning and testing to ensure a positive user experience.
  • Ensuring a robust system capable of handling a large volume of transactions.
  • Building a digital platform ready to scale and grow without disruption, when needed, according to shifting business conditions.
  • Fostering collaboration among many stakeholders and team members to achieve the desired results and business objectives.

The Solution

We have led this major project, working and collaborating with the Innovation and Multichannel departments within BBVA Bank. We worked on the full renovation of the architecture and technology stack.

The project implies having an Enterprise Bus Service to attend the various channels such as Home Banking, IVR, self-service terminals, and other external services.

As the application handles more than 250.000 logins and 80.000 transactions per month, exhaustive testing (stress, performance, and penetration) was performed before going live to avoid any issues or unexpected errors affecting the user experience.

The App look & feel was revamped as well; for this project, we worked directly with Headquarters in Spain.
